5th Grade Band Receives "Excellent" Rating at NAU Jazz Festival

February 22, 2018

Rancho Solano’s 5th Grade Band impressed the crowd today at the Northern Arizona University Jazz Festival in Flagstaff. The 24 students, who have been playing their instruments for just 18 months or fewer, performed on the stage of NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium for a large audience.

The festival adjudicators, who are professional jazz musicians and college jazz department professors from across the country, awarded the 5th Grade Band an overall rating of “Excellent” in the High School Division III. Additionally, an “Outstanding Soloist” award was presented to Maya Bean for her improvised flute solo, with honorable mentions to Trevor Head on the trombone.

Students performed the classic swing tune, “St. Louis Blues,” as well as Latin and rock-style charts. Afterwards, students participated in a private clinic with professional jazz saxophonist Roxy Coss. The band enjoyed seeing the college campus, discovering the workings of a backstage auditorium, and watching other band performances!

By the way, this group set a Rancho Band record by earning a Superior rating from one judge and an "Excellent+" rating from the other two. We were just one point away from a Superior... in the high school division!
