RS 6TH Grader Makes Summer Reading Possible for Hundreds of Native American Kids

May 12, 2016

Rancho Solano 6th grade student Sophia Koss has a passion for reading and an extraordinary commitment to helping others in her community. For her National Junior Honor Society community service project, Sophia organized a book collection with the goal of giving them away to less-privileged school-aged children so they would have books to read at home over the summer.  Sophia asked the Phoenix Indian Center to partner with her and help with the book distribution. The result? More than 1700 books collected, with over 1000 of those donated from Rancho Solano students and families!  They will be distributed over the next two weeks to Native American students in grades K-8 in both Mesa and Tempe area school districts, as well as to several remote schools located on the Navajo Reservation and the Gila River Indian Community.  Sophia chose this project because education is important to her and she hopes other kids will feel the same way.
