RS 7th Graders Named State Winners in the 14th Annual eCybermission STEM Competition

May 03, 2016

Two teams of students from Rancho Solano recently took 1st and 2nd place in the U.S. Army’s 14th annual eCYBERMISSION competition. eCYBERMISSION, sponsored by the U.S. Army and administered by the National Science Teachers Association, is a web-based STEM competition designed to help build and sustain students’ interest and knowledge in STEM.

Students from around the country in grades six through nine were challenged to develop a solution to a real-world problem.

Team Koala – 1st place in AZ –  Anna Jondle, Lexi Arana, Sierra Kuperschmid, and Beckett Hans.

Project Summary: Researching what type of breakfast is most nutritious for children and adults. The results also show which food items give you the most energy and ability to focus.

Team Hawk – 2nd place in AZ -  Evan Punches, Abbey Herter, Olo Adebayo, and Brandon Yang.

Project Summary: Developing a healthy alternative to energy drinks, which will boost energy and increase a human’s life span.

Each member of the 1st place team receives a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond, and each member of the 2nd place team receives a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. Through the eCYBERMISSION website, each team created a mission folder—the official write-up of their project— which required them to work through all steps of their project before submitting it to be evaluated and scored by a panel of virtual judges.

In the next round of the eCybermission competition, a panel of virtual judges will evaluate the top three scores from each region in each grade level. Sixty regional finalist teams will compete to advance as one of 20 national finalists, moving on to compete at the National Judging and Educational Event this June in Washington, D.C.
