RS Students Attend Genocide Awareness Conference

April 21, 2016

In recognition of Genocide Awareness week, Middle School students in Mr. Minneci’s World Cultures class attended a conference at Scottsdale Community College to hear lectures by distinguished survivors. The students learned about the concept of genocide, its defining characteristics, and the importance of respect for varying cultures.  The discussion also focused on the awareness of current and past world events and the outcome of intolerance towards others.

Two Holocaust survivors gave presentations.  Oskar Knoblauch, ‘Lessons learned from surviving the Holocaust’ was 14 years old in 1939, when World War II began. Marion Weizweig, ’Holocaust Through a Child’s eyes’ who was 18 months old at the start of the event and described her experiences after being given away by her parents to protect her from the Nazi’s.

While cross-cultural friendships are the norm at RSPS, the conference helped the students develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the importance of making a positive difference in the world.
