State Champions!

February 26, 2018

It took all thirty-two minutes and every ounce of energy the team had, but when the buzzer sounded Saturday night, your Rancho Solano Mustangs were State Champions! Playing not just against the Alchesay Falcons, but also their contingent of 5,000 passionate fans, the Mustangs came away with a 69-62 victory in the 2A State Championship Game. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and used stifling defense to hold Alchesay to their lowest scoring half of the season and led 38-17 going into the second half. The lead would increase to 26 points before Alchesay began their frantic comeback. With an aggressive defense and outside shooting, the Falcons fought back to cut the lead to six with less than two minutes to play. However, it was the Mustangs that made crucial plays down the stretch to close out the game. Hunter Ruck (’20) collected an offensive rebound and scored, extending the Mustangs' lead to 8 with less than one minute to go, and clutch free throws from Nikc Jackson (’18) and Tyson Legner (’20) kept Alchesay at arm’s length to close out the game.

Caden Hoffman (’18) led the Mustangs with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, Hunter Ruck (’20) had a double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and was a perfect 6-6 from the floor. The key factor in this game was that the Mustangs' depth and crucial contributions came from every member of the team. Tyson Legner (’20) and Kiimani Holt (’20) both scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. John Gorgol (’19) contributed 6 rebounds and stellar defense, Nikc Jackson (’18) made key free throws down the stretch despite foul trouble, while Brett Hardt Jr. (’21) made a crucial 1st half basket and was fouled to convert the 3-point play. This is the first Team State Championship in school history, and the team also set school records in almost every team-related category this season. Congratulations Mustangs!
