Ten RSPS Students Participate in the AMEA ES/JH All-State Orchestra Festival

April 04, 2018

The AMEA (Arizona Music Educators Association) ES/JH All-State Orchestra Festival was held on Saturday, March 24 at Perry High School in Gilbert, AZ.  Music educators from all public, private, and charter schools in Arizona were eligible to nominate up to seven talented 6th grade students for the Elementary School (ES) and up to six 7th-8th grade students for the Junior High (JH) festival. Once the nominations were received, AMEA festival officials selected an equal amount of students to participate from each school, based upon instrumentation needs. This year, the following students from Rancho Solano were selected to participate:

Elementary All-State Orchestra: Katya Alofs - violin; Talia Cho - violin; Elle Discont – violin; Vera Zuch - viola; Avery Shafron - cello; and Kamryn Barako - string bass.

Junior High All-State Orchestra: Bella Agarwal - violin; Layla Alawali - violin; Juan Carlos Urbina - violin; and Ridge Hall - cello.

These students spent the entire day with more than 180 "best of the best" students from around the state of Arizona rehearsing challenging concert literature together both as a large group and in smaller sectional groups. This year, the Elementary guest conductor was Linda Levy from Gilbert Public Schools and the Junior High guest conductor was Dana Graybeal from Thunderbird HS and Phoenix College.  Beginning at 4:00 pm on March 24, students presented a fabulous Gala Concert that was open to the public. The Elementary orchestra performed three selections: “Meridian Passage” by Doug Spata, “Strawberry Jam Session” by George Frueh, and “Velocity” by Brian Balmages. The Junior High orchestra performed four selections: “Across the Wind” by Doug Spata, “Allegro Barbaro” by Bela Bartok, “Cinema Paradiso” by Ennio and Andrea Morricone, and “Plink, Plank, Plunk” by Leroy Anderson.

BRAVO to all of our fantastic student musicians who represented Rancho Solano Preparatory with pride and excellence!
