Media and fine arts

At Rancho Solano, students bring ideas to life through creativity, exploration, and expression. Across visual and performing arts, media, and technology, they engage in hands-on experiences that deepen learning, strengthen critical thinking, and build confidence in their unique voice.

Students are encouraged to think creatively, take risks, and share their work with purpose. Whether performing, creating, designing, or producing, they explore new perspectives while developing both artistic skill and technical fluency.

By celebrating their own talents and appreciating the work of others, students cultivate a lasting passion for creativity - one that prepares them to communicate, collaborate, and thrive in an ever-evolving world.

Areas of specialization

Our Fine & Performing Arts program inspires students to explore creativity, express themselves, and grow as confident performers and artists. Through visual arts, music, theatre, and dance, students engage in hands-on experiences that develop technical skills, artistic voice, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

Visual arts

In Pre-K and Lower School, students spark their creativity by exploring how art connects with history, cultures, and everyday life. Through hands-on projects, they experiment with color, shape, and form while discovering a variety of materials and techniques. As they learn about influential artists and movements, they begin to develop their own artistic voice.

In Middle School, students expand their skills across 2D, 3D, and digital media, applying the Elements and Principles of Design to communicate ideas. They connect art to historical and cultural contexts, analyze artistic movements, and build confidence presenting and critiquing their work.

In High School, students pursue advanced coursework, including IB Visual Arts, where they push materials and techniques to new levels. They explore art-making, theory, and curatorial practices, connecting personal expression with global perspectives and graduating with a strong, individual artistic vision.

Music

Students begin their musical journey in Preschool and Kindergarten by exploring rhythm, melody, and movement through singing, instruments, storytelling, and active listening. Early performance opportunities help build confidence and a joy for creative expression.

In Lower School, students develop foundational skills in music theory, history, and performance while playing instruments such as percussion, keyboards, and xylophones. By grade 3, they explore different ensemble options, and by grades 4 and 5, they personalize their experience by joining band, choir, or orchestra and performing throughout the year.

Middle School students continue to refine their skills through Concert Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, Choir, Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano. They perform regularly, collaborate in ensembles, and grow in confidence and musicianship.

In High School, students advance through rigorous courses and participate in festivals, competitions, and performances. Opportunities such as music honor societies foster leadership, collaboration, and artistic excellence.

Performing arts

Lower School children explore drama, movement, and expression through age-appropriate activities that complement their music education. They perform in events throughout the school year, combining storytelling and performance to build confidence, teamwork, and creativity.

In Middle School, they participate in theatre, Musical Theatre, and dance. Numerous extra-curricular offerings become available to our middle school student-performers. They collaborate across grades, build stage presence, and develop skills in choreography, acting, and vocal performance.

In High School, students in theatre and dance courses perform regularly in showcases, competitions, and school productions. There is a strong focus on student-led performances, with an emphasis on process as much as performance. They develop mastery of musicality, and ensemble work, leadership, and gaining the confidence and skills to pursue performing arts both in college and beyond.

Dance

At our international school in Scottsdale, students master a spectrum of dance styles - from ballet and jazz to contemporary, and hip hop - developing strength, precision, and expressive artistry. They create and perform original choreography in showcases like Rancho Under the Stars and semi-annual dance concerts.

Through movement, students sharpen collaboration, critical thinking, and cultural awareness, gaining the skills and confidence to excel as performers and creative leaders.

Areas of specialization

Our Media, Innovation & Technology program empowers students to become creators, problem-solvers, and innovators. Through a dynamic blend of media arts, STEM, robotics, and applied technology, students build confidence, creativity, and technical fluency through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

STEM & Applied Technology

Students build a strong foundation in scientific reasoning and technological fluency through hands-on exploration and experimentation. Courses emphasize the scientific method, physical science concepts, and engineering design, while introducing practical technology skills such as hardware, networking, and digital tools.

Students learn to evaluate information, analyze data, and apply problem-solving strategies to real-world challenges. This pathway nurtures curiosity and prepares students for future STEM learning while helping them understand how technology shapes the world around them.

Media Arts & Digital Storytelling

Students in Media Arts transform their ideas into compelling stories through film, photography, animation, and interactive media. They explore how image, sound, and narrative work together to shape meaning while learning the full creative process, from concept development to production and post-production.

Through filmmaking, editing, directing, and screenwriting, students develop both technical expertise and a strong creative voice. They also analyze film history, aesthetics, and media criticism, gaining a deeper understanding of media’s cultural impact and role in society.

Using professional tools and post-production labs, students become skilled, versatile creators prepared for advanced study and creative careers.

Robotics & Engineering

Our robotics pathway introduces students to engineering through hands-on building, coding, and iterative design. Using LEGO SPIKE, VEX EXP, and VEX V5 systems, students learn mechanical engineering concepts, sensor integration, automation, and programming logic.

Intermediate and advanced students explore drone technology, flight mechanics, and real-world drone applications. Competitive robotics opportunities challenge students to develop teamwork, strategy, persistence, and innovative problem-solving as they design and refine robots for real competitions.

These experiences build technical confidence and foster an engineering mindset.

Technology education

Students develop essential digital literacy skills alongside a strong foundation in coding and computational thinking. They learn to find, evaluate, create, and present information across digital platforms while using a range of modern tools and technologies.

Coding courses introduce programming concepts through creative problem-solving, allowing students to build apps, animations, and interactive experiences. Game design electives expand these skills into storytelling, world-building, and digital interactivity using industry tools.

Through this work, students gain the confidence to navigate, create, and innovate in a connected, technology-driven world.

Digital Creation, Yearbook & Social Media

These courses give students authentic opportunities to become designers, storytellers, and content creators. Yearbook and social media students document school life, develop interviewing and writing skills, and create polished publications for real audiences.

Graphic design courses build visual communication skills through typography, layout, branding, and digital design principles. Students also explore the strategy, ethics, and impact of social media while developing a professional digital presence.

Together, these experiences strengthen creativity, communication, and real-world content creation skills.
